Marketing Tips Around The Net: September 25th

It's Friday and that means that it's time to look across the big, wide web to see what other experts had to say to help us market our books. Sit back with your favorite beverage and soak in the knowledge from this week's Marketing Tips Around The Net. Before we get to the tour, here are a couple of quick housekeeping announcements.

1. This week's new video tip is out: Creating Websites Using WordPress. If you have not signed up for my free video tips, then you can do so now at the side of my blog or on my video tips sign-up page. Not only will you be able to watch the current video tip, but you will have instant access to over 45 minutes of free video tips.

2. Chapter 17 in my award winning novel, The Samson Effect, has been released on the serial release site. If you have not started this novel that NY Times best selling author Clive Cussler calls a "first rate thriller brimming with intrigue and adventure", then you can visit the Table of Contents to start from the beginning. While there, check out the announcement of the novel being acquired by a major Hollywood film producer.

Now, on to the tour...

1. The Internet marketing scattershot approach is unlikely to hit your target market- Phyllis Zimbler Miller shows you the importance of knowing your target audience if you want to market your book effectively.

2. Just the FAQs Podcast- Dana Lynn Smith is the latest to be interviewed by MaAnna Stephenson and discusses how authors can use Twitter and Facebook as great marketing tools.

4. The Skinny on Business Cards for Writers- Carolyn Howard-Johnson talks about how a business card can be a mini advertisement for authors, published and unpublished alike.

5. Lessons Learnt From Dan Brown: The Lost Symbol- Joanna Penn has a great article breaking down Dan Brown's book marketing activities around the release of his new book. She also gives her thoughts on the book itself and gives a warning that it may contain spoilers, but she tells you when she is done talking about his marketing activities and starts with her thoughts on the book.

6. How to Promote a Blog- Darren Rowse has a video post where he takes you beyond using social media sites to find readers for your blogs.

7. Create a Following- Patricia Vennes gives advice on how you can find people who look forward to your blog posts.

8. Win the fight, lose the customer- Is the customer always right? Should you fire a customer? Seth Godin weighs in on this perennial topic.

9. Windows 7, Will It Do It For You? ;)- (For the tech news that can affect authors) It's coming: Windows 7! Probably the most talked about upgrade to windows ever. And the reviews are very positive. Here is an article by Mike Halsey to give you some ideas about what's in store for this new windows operating system.

10. Confusing Words, Commonly Misused- Patti Stafford shares some words that authors, and even marketers writing ad copy, can misuse.

That's it for this week's trip around the net. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. I look forward to seeing you on Monday with more tips to help you market your book.

What a great way to get the week's most valuable articles/posts into one's reading queue, Tony. Thank you for including mine. I'm on my way to picking up some of the others--maybe print them out to read with a cup of tear.

Best,

Hi Carolyn,

Glad you enjoy the tour. I have a list of sites that I routinely visit that I look for good content for my Friday post. I also gave Google alerts (about 500 come in each week) that I sift through. Then, there are the blogs that I subscribe to. When I see something that catches my eye, I mark it for inclusion in the blog. I try to check out the sites on Friday morning so I can include the absolute latest info I can find. The ten I include are always ones that I read in full and think to myself, "Cool..." I hope others enjoy them.

I have to admit, there are so many good articles out there that I don't have room to include them all. At one point, I thought about including all that I find that I think are worth reading, but my personal opinion is that once you get too many, the lists becomes less likely to be read and enjoyed. Ten seems to be a good number for me.

I also try to give a teaser that gives the flavor of the article without giving away the points that the authors make. That way, readers can scan the list of ten and focus in on the ones that look appealing to them.

But in short, thanks for your comments and for the content that you make available to readers!

Let me just tell you... Your archive tip on linking a photo to another page where people can buy your book was so incredibly helpful and amazingly clear that you now have a real fan. SO smart to take away the fear that so many have of HTML. I followed it to the letter and posted a link on my blog today. Have a look. It's all because of you.
