How To Use Twitter As Your Best Method For Targeted Long Term Traffic: by Samantha Milner

I am excited to introduce you to today's guest author, Samantha Milner, co-founder of DSM Publishing Limited. I found Samantha online via Twitter and started to read some of her blog posts on marketing. Before I was an author, I worked as a marketing professional for an Internet company. Many of the things I read from her were spot-on when it came to my own marketing philosophy. What's more, the day that Samantha sent me her post on using Twitter for targeted, long-term traffic, I had just finished recording a video for my soon to be released video/e-book series on conducting Twitter contests. The video I finished: Targeting Prospect For Your Twitter Contest. If you're interested in some good marketing tips for your book, you need to check out her site.

How To Use Twitter As Your Best Method For Targeted Long Term Traffic
By Samantha Milner

My name is Samantha Milner and I have been using twitter since last Christmas to build traffic through to my varied products. Nobody at the time explained to me how great it is for chatting about what you are eating one moment then arranging a quality joint venture with an internet marketing guru the next. As I recall it was 23rd December 2008 and I was having one of my curiosity moments.

By Boxing Day I had already gained over 400 followers and had struck more partnerships with like minded people than I had in the past four years put together. Then I noticed what other people had been doing on Twitter and it soon came to my attention that fellow Twitters weren't using Twitter to its full advantage – they were simply using it to over promote themselves or their brand.

This is the point when I decided with my Twitter account that I wasn't going to go down the same ugly route. Instead just like with a mailing list I was going to offer value for money and I still do to this day.

If you want to use Twitter for your targeted traffic you need to think of it as a second mailing list. That even though you will very much plug your followers with your products at the same time you will offer worthwhile quality information for free too.

Another part of business today is that people want to know how you tick and through Twitter they can find out even more about you. There is no need to go too deep but chatting about what you are watching on television or which songs you are listening to as you work is a wonderful way of going about it.

Otherwise your Twitter account can very easily be over run with scheduled business tweets and this can look like spam if you are not careful.

Being part of all the trending topics on Twitter will also get your voice out there via your Tweets and people will then check out your Twitter profile which in turn will put you new people on your mailing list. These trends don't have to be about your product that you are selling just be varied enough to bring traffic in your direction.

Adding numbers on your mailing list is also a great benefit of using the Twitter phenomenon. I find though that it works best if you have multiple sign up options in place. For example if you have ten different sign up pages send them to one every day over a ten year period as this way people won't get sick of the exact same tweet. I have been following this method every day since I joined and it has lead to me to gaining over 100 new subscribers every day.

If I went back to just writing articles I would have to write, submit and bookmark 50 a day to get any were near these figures.

But with Twitter you can also do it with so many different places it's so unreal. If you are an affiliate marketer for instance you can post tweets about useful products that are currently the X Factor whenever you like. When I affiliate I find the products that offer a free basic service get the best commissions as you have the upsell sales potential. Fellow Twitters will be put off by the option of a $47 been advertised in a tweet but if you offered a free e-book once on the webpage the amount that will upgrade will be really high.

No matter what niche you are in Twitter is a great place to generate unlimited free traffic that is at your disposal right now. If you have a new Blog with great content just by posting new information to it three times a week will have you receiving 6,000 hits a month within 90 days.

Just think about what you can do with Twitter – I think of it as a free alternative to Google Adwords and imagine what you can achieve. All it takes to have a highly successful Twitter account is an hour a day and this time can be used whilst watching evening television.

Samantha - you are so right about the misuse of Twitter. There is so much shouting going on, but the really successful social networkers on Twitter seem to:

1. Tweet frequently - at least once a day
2. Interact with the community (in the beginning this means finding discussions and getting involved where later you can do more conversing with your followers)
3. Know what your followers interests are and stick close to those interests
4. Cross-market - use other platforms in concert with Twitter such as seminars, YouTube videos, articles and press releases, your blogs, etc... they should all work together instead of being isolated silo's

Great work...see you on Twitter.

Let me just tell you... Your archive tip on linking a photo to another page where people can buy your book was so incredibly helpful and amazingly clear that you now have a real fan. SO smart to take away the fear that so many have of HTML. I followed it to the letter and posted a link on my blog today. Have a look. It's all because of you.
